Most folks, single or married don’t understand the implications of how “who they are dating”, “who they marry” or living in a community property state can negatively impact their financial future if they do not take steps to protect themselves.
Financial abuse can be so subtle and it can take so many forms. It can be someone limiting or monitoring your spending or even hiding purchases. Many times it’s spending family resources on gambling or other “non-agreed” to expenses, or it can be as serious as closing accounts and cutting off the less earning spouse. It can be bad credit or a hidden bankruptcy. Even someone courting a “successful” partner, and hiding their own financial situation and misrepresenting themselves. A recent study reported that financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases.
